 Abstract

    Over the last decades, robots have been used in manufacturing operations to automate dull, dirty and dangerous tasks but remain in a controlled environment. With the rapid development in artificial intelligence, the R&D of unmanned robotic systems is now rising and the systems are expected to handle work in changing, uncertain, and uncontrolled environments. The unmanned robotic systems include unmanned aerial, ground, and maritime systems, both surface and undersea; with applications to space, defense, underwater systems, and some aspects of service and personal robots.

    In this talk, the speaker will present the unmanned robotic system state of the art applications, covering service applications and personal applications. These applications include areas of logistic and healthcare; for service applications: transportation, cleaning and assistance robots for personal applications.

    Finally, the speaker will conclude with future challenges and issues on the development of unmanned robotic system. The unmanned robotic systems don’t necessarily replace humans but complement them. A robot and its human operators are collaborating in achieving their missions. By augmenting the work of humans with unmanned robotic systems, it allows humans to be more efficient and effective in completing tasks.

Biography of Speaker

    Dr. Low Kin Huat is currently a professor in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He obtained his BSc degree from the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, his MSc and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada. He is an author or co-author of about 300 journal and conference papers in the areas of robotics, biomimetics, robotics, rehabilitation, unmanned aerial vehicles, air traffic management, impacts, power transmission systems, structural dynamics, and vibrations. His works on biomimetics and exoskeleton have won the best paper in several IEEE international conferences.

    Professor Low is an Associate Editor of several journals, including Mechanism and Machine Theory, ASME Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics, and Journal of Bionic Engineering. He is also the Guest Editor of several special issues on bio-inspired systems and robotics rehabilitation. He is currently the chairman of the IEEE RAS (Robotics Automation Society) Technical Committee on bio-robotics. He has been involved in the program committee of various international conferences. He has organized several workshops and symposiums in the research fields of bio-inspired robotics.
