Functional 3D Printing – Processing and Design Perspective

ABSTRACT

The majority of 3D printing systems are designed to work with a single material at a time. Furthermore, the printed parts nearly always serve a structural function (e.g. plastic housings, titanium bone implants, etc.). A new generation of 3D printing technologies has started to emerge in which (a) multiple materials can be digitally blended to produce parts having heterogeneous properties, and (b) the deposited materials can serve more than just structural functions, e.g. electrical, thermal, optical, magnetic, chemical or other functions. While the applications for functional 3D printing are nearly endless, significant challenges remain to be addressed in order to achieve desired functions. This talk will start with an overview of 3D printing technology and some recent developments on functional printing. The challenges of developing functional 3D printing processes based on some of our recent work will be discussed. In addition, how to use functional and heterogeneous material property to realize design benefits will be discussed as well as some novel applications enabled by functional 3D printing. The talk will conclude with remarks and thoughts on future 3D printing developments and potential opportunities for mechanical engineers.

摘要: 大多数的3D打印系统每次只适合打印一种材料。而且,打印的零件只符合一种结构功能(例如:塑料产品,钛骨植入物等)。新一代的3D打印技术开始出现,体现在一下几个方面:a)多种材料混合可以打印出多种性能的部件;b)沉积材料可满足多种结构功能,例如电力学,热力学,光学,磁学,化学以及其他功能。功能3D打印的应用是无止尽,为了获得所需的功能,我们要迎接重大的挑战。这次讲座我们先了解3D打印技术的概况以及功能打印的一些最新发展。基于我们最近的一些工作,我们将讨论发展功能3D打印过程的挑战。另外我们将讨论如何利用功能和多样化的材料性能去实现设计效益以及一些新颖的应用。这次讲座的最后,我们会对未来3D打印在机械工程领域的发展和潜在的机会作总结和展望。

 

Short-Bio

Dr. Yong Chen is an associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering (courtesy) at University of Southern California (USC).  He received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2001. Prior to joining USC in 2006, he was a senior Research and Development (R&D) engineer in 3D Systems Inc.  Dr. Chen’s research focuses on additive manufacturing (3D printing) especially modeling, analyzing, synthesizing, and optimizing digital design and manufacturing. Dr. Chen has published more than 80 publications in refereed journals and conferences. Among them, he received a number of Best/Outstanding Paper Awards in major design and manufacturing journals and conferences. Other major awards he received include the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, and the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). Currently he serves in the editorial boards of Computer-aided Design, ASME Journal of Computers and Information in Engineering, and International Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing. He has served as conference program chair as well as keynote speaker in several international conferences.

个人简介:陈勇博士,美国南加州大学工业与系统工程终身副教授。2001年在美国乔治亚理工学院获得机械工程博士学位。2001至2006年在美国3D Systems 公司任高级研发工程师。在2006年进入南加州大学任教。陈勇博士研究领域为增材制造(三维打印)工艺,尤其是数字化制造工艺和产品的建模、分析、合成与优化。已经发表超过80篇同行评议的期刊及会议论文。其中多次在国际设计与制造会议及期刊中获得最佳研究论文奖。除此之外,他获得的其它重要奖项还包括美国国家自然科学基金的杰出青年教师发展奖(CAREER),美国制造工程师学会(SME)的杰出青年制造工程师奖等。目前他是“计算机辅助设计”与“精密工程与制造”国际学术期刊以及“国际精密工程与制造杂志”的编委。曾担任多个国际会议的议程主席及主讲嘉宾。
