Abstract
  There exists a major demand for research and development on mobile robots, to function effectively in various environments and across multiple application domains: on factory floors and disaster-affected areas, in homes and hospitals, indoors and outdoors. In response to this demand, significant investment has been made in recent years by both governments and research communities on mobile robotics research. One area of significant progress is the use of visual sensing by mobile robots to map and navigate in an environment, as well as to detect and recognize objects. This progress is mostly attributed to the rich textural information in visual sensory data, the low cost and ubiquitousness of cameras, as well as the great strides made in the development of efficient and robust computer vision and image processing algorithms.
  In this talk, I will give an overview of the recent research progress in visual robot navigation, highlight the state-of-the-art methods and techniques, and describe the challenges facing mobile robotics research, including the need to handle dynamic changes that occur in their environments, during long-term operations of mobile robots.

  为了在各种环境和多种应用领域中发挥功能, 移动机器人的研究开发有重大需求:在工厂车间和受灾地区,在家庭和医院,室内和室外,等。因应这种需求,近来政府和研究单位对移动机器人的研究开发投入很大。其中一个重大进展在于移动机器人采用视觉传感在环境中导航和构建地图、检测和识别物体。这种进展主要是归因于视觉传感数据的丰富纹理信息, 低成本和相机的广泛使用以及在高效和强大的计算机视觉和图像处理算法中的长足进步。
  本报告将概述机器人视觉导航的最新研究进展,尤其是相关方法和技术的研究现状,并指出移动机器人研究所面临的挑战,包括处理发生在其环境中的动态变化,移动机器人的长期操作。

Biography
  Dr. Hong Zhang received his B.S. from Northeastern University (Boston), and Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1986, both in Electrical Engineering. Subsequently he spent 18 months with the GRASP Lab at the University of Pennsylvania as post-doctoral fellow before joining the University of Alberta, Canada where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Computing Science and the Director of the Centre for Intelligent Mining Systems.
  Dr. Zhang’s research interest spans robotics, computer vision, and image processing, and he has published close to 200 papers in international journals and conferences in these areas. He is mostly known for his research in collective robotics – introducing biologically inspired solutions to decentralized control of a multi-robot system - and in applied image processing for Alberta’s oil sands industry for measuring key performance indicators, creating a unique expertise that never existed before. His current research focuses on visual robot navigation and its application to environment monitoring in Canadian outdoors.
  Dr. Zhang has been active in professional activities. His journal editorial activities include IEEE Transaction on Cybernetics, Robotics, and International Journal of Robotics and Biomimetics. Dr. Zhang chaired the technical committee on Robotics and Manufacturing Automation of the IEEE Society on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics from (2005-15), and is serving as an AdCom member of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (2014-2016). Dr. Zhang's achievements have been recognized through many awards including IEEE Millennium Medal in 2000, the 2006 Canadian Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society (CIPPRS) Award for Research Excellence, and a 2008
ASTech Award in recognition of his contributions to industrial research in Alberta. He is the holder of NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Intelligent Sensing Systems, a Fellow of the IEEE, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

  张宏教授,1982年获得美国东北大学电子工程学士学位,1986年获得美国普渡大学电子工程博士学位。在美国宾夕法尼亚大学GRASP实验室从事一年半的博士后研究工作,随后在加拿大阿尔伯塔大学任教。目前是计算机科学系教授,并担任智能采矿系统中心主任。现为NSERC(加拿大自然科学与工程技术研究理事会)工业研究智能传感系统主席、IEEE Fellow 和加拿大工程院院士。
  张宏教授的研究涉及机器人学、计算机视觉和图像处理,已在相关领域国际期刊和会议发表论文近200篇,以“群体机器人”(提出了多机器人系统分散控制的仿生学求解方法)和“阿尔伯塔油砂业中的图像处理技术”(在世界上开创了一个独特的领域)最为闻名。张教授目前重点研究机器人视觉导航及其在加拿大户外环境监控中的应用。
  张宏教授在学术界很活跃,担任包括IEEE Transaction on Cybernetics (控制论汇刊)、International Journal of Robotics and Biomimetics (机器人学与仿生学)等多个期刊的编委;担任IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics机器人与制造自动化技术委员会主席(2005-15),当选为IEEE RAS全球Adcom委员(高层领导,2014-2016)。张教授获得众多的学术荣誉和奖章,包括IEEE千禧奖(2000年)、加拿大模式识别协会奖(2006年)、阿尔伯塔省最高科学荣誉奖(2008年)。
